PREVIEW: Knights set to face Seneca

PREVIEW: Knights set to face Seneca

Tuesday, October 14th at 8:15pm.
Newnham Campus – Home of the Sting.

Knights Road Record:     2-1-0
Sting Home Record:        0-3-0

Still fighting for a playoff spot, the Niagara College men's soccer (3-3-1, 3rd Central) program is headed on the road to compete against the Seneca Sting (1-5-2, 6th Central).  With the top four teams from each region earning a playoff spot, the Knights can make the OCAA postseason for the third consecutive season.

Sitting only five points behind Sheridan for second place, the Knights still have a chance at locking up a bye for the provincial tournament.  The Humber Hawks are the host team this season and if they win their division, the regions next best team inherits that bye.

Seneca comes into this matchup losers of two straight and winless in their last six contests.  Over that span the Sting have been outscored 21-5.  The Knights also come into this game off a loss; a crucial defeat at home by the Sheridan Bruins.  The Knights fell behind 2-0 in the early stages and despite the two-goal effort of Kimbrel Donayre (St. Catharines), Niagara was unable to win the game.

When these two programs faced off for the first time, the final result was a 1-1 draw.  Despite leading the match in possession, shots on net, and scoring chances, the Knights were unable to secure three points at home.  Andy Hein (Omemee) scored the only tally for Niagara in the match.  Goalkeeper Jordan Provenzano (Niagara Falls) was ejected in the 70th minute after arguing an offside call that resulted in a hand ball foul.  The ensuing penalty kick by Sting player Mark Eydelman turned out to be the equalizer, as the Knights could not score another goal down a man.

With three games still left in the OCAA regular season, the Knights still have a chance of setting a new school record for wins in a season.
