Jackie Lawther and Alex Latham named athletes of the week

Male Athlete of the Week – Alex Latham, Men’s Soccer

Alex Latham of the Niagara College men’s soccer program has been named this week’s male athlete of the week.  Latham played his best soccer this week, helping the Knights secure three points with a win over George Brown and a draw against Seneca College.

The Welland native has played every minute of the Knights first four games to start his career, continuously putting his teammates in situations to succeed.  In Saturday’s match against Seneca, the pre-health science major helped set-up a goal from Andy Hein to gain the early lead.

“Shaggy [Alex Latham] is a talented player, no doubt,” said Niagara College men’s soccer head coach Frank DeChellis. “We’ve known him since he was very young and he’s always been impressive.  He is really making a case for OCAA rookie of the year.”

Now ranked third in the province, Latham and the rest of the Niagara College men’s soccer program will head to Toronto on Tuesday, September 29th to face off against the first place Hawks.

Female Athlete of the Week – Jackie Lawther, Women’s Soccer

Jackie Lawther of the Niagara College women’s soccer program has been named this week’s female athlete of the week. The fourth-year forward helped lead the Knights to a 1-0-1 week, scoring four goals in two matches.

“Jackie’s accomplishment is well-deserved,” said Niagara College women’s soccer head coach Frank DeChellis.  “Her commitment to her personal fitness level and her dedication to this program has earned her the respect of every student-athlete on campus.”

Lawther is a native of Beamsville, Ontario. She competed in eight matches for the Knights during the 2014 season, earning the team most valuable player award. Her four goals this season is a new school record, breaking Ashley DePalma’s record set in 2009.  The sport management student now has five career OCAA goals, moving her into first place on the school’s all-time scoring list.

Lawther and the rest of the Niagara College women’s soccer program will return to action on Tuesday, September 29th when the team visits the first place Humber Hawks.
