Friday, October 31st saw the Niagara College women's volleyball program make quick work of their visiting Mohawk Mountaineers opponents. In a match that took just over an hour, the Knights cruised to an impressive 25-18, 25-13, 25-15 victory.
A pair of veterans and close friends from Stratford, Ontario led the way offensively for Niagara. Six-foot middle blocker Nicole Schoonderwoerd finished with a game high 14 points on eight kills, three aces, and three blocks, while fifth year outside hitter Lucy McLay finished with 13 points on nine kills and four aces.
"The girls came in focused on our side of the court" said fourth year women's volleyball head coach Joey Martins. "We controlled the game from start to finish. We served tough and effective and were not trying to do too much. I felt we played our game and were very much in control of the outcome and ourselves."
Making her home court debut, first-year setter Bailey Davis (Georgetown) quarterbacked the Knights offense to victory. Despite being just two games into her post-secondary career the five-foot-seven Recreation and Leisure Services student, displays tremendous vision and composure on the court. Davis finished with 23 assists in the match.
The Knights will have a full week off to ready for their next game versus a strong Redeemer Royals side (2-1). First serve is set for November 7th at 6:00pm at Redeemer's home gym in Ancaster.
In the 8:00pm men's matchup between the Mountaineers and Knights, Mohawk made equally short work of a young Niagara team, needing just an hour to win 3-0. the set scores in the contest were 25-19, 25-21, 25-18.
The Knights return just six players from last year's team that finished with a record of 14-4, and with five first years players on the team, the Knights have started slowly in 2014-15.
Against Mohawk (3-0), the team showed flashes of their potential, but were unable string together enough points against the defending OCAA Champion Mountaineers.
Six-foot-eight outside hitter Nathan Snippe (St. Anns, ON) led the way offensively for Niagara finishing with 11 points on seven kills, three blocks, and an ace.
Niagara will look to rebound on November 7th when the team visits the Redeemer Royals at 8:00pm.
