Women's Volleyball
Once again, the Niagara College women's volleyball (5-0, 2nd West) program put their undefeated streak on the line and once again, they came through. After moving into 14th place in the national rankings, the Knights hosted two games over the weekend at home.
Saturday, November 15th saw the Knights host Cambrian College (2-4, 6th West). The Knights won in straight sets 3-0 but the games were much closer than the final score indicates. The set scores were 31-29 25-21 25-17.
In the first set, the Knights came out slow and failed to execute the game plan that fourth year head coach Joey Martins created, but ultimately took the victory with a gritty comeback. "We had our up and down moments but prevailed without dropping the set," said coach Martins. "We faced some difficult situations but as a team we persevered and were able to grow because of it."
Third year middle blocker Nicole Schoonderwoerd (Tavistock) was efficient for the Knights, recording 10 kills on only 14 attacks.
On Sunday, November 16th, the Knights faced off against the winless Boreal Viperes (0-6, 10th West) and came away with another victory in straight sets. The set scores were 25-8 26-24 25-15.
Every available Knight received playing time this weekend, which is an important factor for any elite program. "We received great output from everybody on the team today which was great," added coach Martins. "Getting each player into the match, receiving valuable court time, is important to the future of our program."
Top scorers for the Knights this weekend were: Lucy McLay (Stratford) 29 points 15 digs, Linnea Davis (Brampton) 14 points 12 digs, Samantha Bailey (Cambridge) 13 points 15 digs, and Bailey Davis (Georgetown) with 60 assists and six points.
The team will look to remain unbeaten this week when they host the Conestoga Condors (1-5, 9th West) on November 21st.
