This weekend saw the Niagara College women's volleyball program improve their record to 12-3 with a pair of road victories over the Cambrian Golden Shield and Boreal Vipers.
January 31st saw the Knights battle to a hard fought five-set win over a tough Golden Shield side that is battling for the final OCAA playoff spot. The set scores in the contest were 19-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-22, 15-13.
"The Cambrian match was a very tough night but we will definitely take the win" said Niagara College women's volleyball head coach Joey Martins. "Cambrian is a good team and it is very tough to travel all day then play. It showed in that we were really sluggish to start the match but consistently battled back."
Veteran outside hitters Lucy McLay (Stratford) and Linnea Davis (Brampton) paced the Knights offense finishing with 14 points each, while libero Vaska Hamanova (Mississauga) finished with a game high 28 digs.
The Knights again took to the court on Sunday, February 1st to take on the Boreal Vipers. The Knights took the opportunity to use the bulk of their roster en route to the 25-22, 25-9, 25-14 victory.
"We are a much deeper team this year then we have been in the past, and our Boreal match really showcased that. We focused on our side of the court today, and executed our game quite well" added Coach Martins.
Veteran outside hitter Kayde Bailey (Burlington) led the Knights finishing with nine points including an impressive six service aces.
Also turning in strong performances for the Knights were first year middle blockers Devon Lowes (Oakville) and Shaniah Wielink (Vinleand). Lowes finished with eight points, on four kills, two aces, and two blocks, while Wielink recorded three blocks, two kills, and two aces.
The Knights now sit is sole possession of second place in the OCAA West Division with three games remaining in the regular season.
Up next the team will travel to Hamilton on February 6th to take on the Mohawk Mountaineers. First serve for the match is set for 6:00pm.
