With 2015-16 tryouts set to begin, the Niagara College women's volleyball program is pleased to announce the addition of impact outside hitter Rachel Rivers. The Cambridge, Ontario native will bring the 2015 OCAA bronze medal winners size, athleticism and experience to the outside hitter position.
Rivers stands six-feet tall and possesses a high level of skill and athleticism. When she graduated from Galt Collegiate Institute in 2013, Rivers was among the province's top recruits. She competed for a season with the St. Clair Saints before deciding to enroll in the Niagara College's computer programming program.
"Rachel is a tremendous athlete, and impact player at the post-secondary level," said Niagara College women's volleyball head coach Joey Martins. "We are excited to have her join us as she figures to be a central piece to our women's volleyball program for the next three to four seasons."
During her 2013-14 OCAA rookie season, Rivers averaged an impressive 3.3 points-per-set, good enough for ninth place in league scoring. Rivers also led her program in scoring (160) and kills (138).
When asked why she chose Niagara College, Rivers was direct and to the point. "I have heard great things about the academics, as well as the athletics at Niagara, so it just seems to be a perfect fit for me," said Rivers. She continued, "The team is a great group of girls, and I'm excited to see what we can all accomplish together."
"I want to head to provincials and win a gold medal, then head to nationals and win another gold," said Rivers when asked her goals for the upcoming season. "I'm willing to play whatever role needed of me to accomplish just that."
Rivers and fellow recruits Jordan Koslowski (Hamilton) and Jasmine Thome (Kenora) gained first experience with the team during an exhibition road trip to Michigan for matches against US collegiate opponents.
The 2015-16 OCAA regular season begins for the Knights when the host the Fanshawe Falcons October 22 at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre.
