PREVIEW: Lundy & Hilton set sights on Knights career assist record in home doubleheader

PREVIEW: Lundy & Hilton set sights on Knights career assist record in home doubleheader

It is possible that the Niagara Knights men's basketball program (8-4, 4th OCAA West) will have a new all-time career assists leader this weekend when the Sault Cougars (4-7, 7th OCAA West) visit the Welland Campus Athletic Centre. Both Marako Lundy (Nassau, Bahamas) and Lequan Hylton (Mississauga) are within striking distance of former Knight Jimmy Bilenga's (2010-13) career mark of 118 assists.

Entering the weekend doubleheader on January 30th and 31st against the Cougars, Lundy has 114 career assists while Hylton sits at 110. Those numbers have them second and fourth respectively on the Knights all-time list. With six games remaining this season it is not a matter of if the record gets broken, but rather a matter of who will break it first. Through 12 games this season Hylton is the Knights' assist leader with 37, while Lundy holds down the second spot with 23. Although it is not a given, it would not be a surprise if either student-athlete passes their way into the top spot this weekend.

Collectively the Knights team is coming off their biggest win of the season, dethroning the OCAA West division's top team with a 94-88 victory over the Mohawk Mountaineers (10-2, 1st OCAA West). They will now look to carry that momentum into a two game set against the visiting Cougars. Aside from the presence of Lundy and Hylton on the floor, the Knights have received outstanding contributions from throughout the lineup. Both Jordon McDonald (Mississauga) and Delroy Grandison (Kingston, Jamaica) were key contributors last week in the victory over Mohawk, contributing 22 and 19 points respectively.

Currently in fourth place Niagara are looking to keep pace with the teams ahead of them in the West division standings. Heading into the stretch run, a home playoff date will be on the line. A fourth place finish would guarantee the Knights a playoff game on home floor, whereas fifth place would send them on the road for the opening round.

Saturday's game is scheduled for an 8:00 pm tipoff, while opening tip on Sunday will take place at 3:00 pm. Both games will be played at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $5.00, while students and those under the age of 17 are admitted free. For those unable to be in attendance, all Knights home games are live streamed through www.goknights.ca/watchlive.
