PREVIEW: Playoff implications for Knights against St. Clair and Lambton

PREVIEW: Playoff implications for Knights against St. Clair and Lambton

A pair of games this weekend for the Niagara Knights men's basketball team (10-5, 4th OCAA West) will have major playoff implications as the regular season winds down. The Knights will hit the road to take on the St. Clair Saints (5-9, 6th OCAA West) and Lambton Lions (9-5, 5th OCAA West).

With three games remaining in the regular season schedule, the Knights are hoping to maintain 4th position in the OCAA West division, which would provide them with home floor advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Sitting only two points up on Lambton, with an additional game played, this weekend will be key for the Knights. A pair of victories would provide the Knights some much needed breathing room in the standings and some much needed momentum as the season winds down.

On Saturday the Knights will visit the Saints in Windsor for a dinner time affair at 6:00 pm. In their previous matchup this season the Knights triumphed 80-69 on the back of a double-double by Jordon McDonald (Mississauga), who recorded 21 points and a season-high 17 rebounds. Marako Lundy (Nassau, Bahamas) also reached double-digits with 16 points.

A quick turnaround will find the Knights on the home court of the Lambton Lions for a 3:00pm start on Valentine's Day. However, there will be no love lost between the two opponents, as the Knights squeaked out a 2-point overtime victory on the strength of a miracle half-court from Marako Lundy to force overtime and a 3-point buzzer beater by DJ Morrison (Scarborough) in the extra frame.

The Knights finished with a 94-92 victory over the Lions, which now proves to be the difference separating the two teams in the standings. Although they hope it won't take the same type of heroics this time around, Niagara would love to beat the Lions on Sunday and solidify their playoff positioning.

Niagara will be back in the Welland Campus Athletic Centre on February 19 for their final regular season game when they host the Humber Hawks (13-3, 1st OCAA West). The night will also serve as Grad Night in which Niagara College Athletics and Recreation will honour graduating athletes for their accomplishments both on and off the court prior to the opening tip-off.
