RECAP: Knights sweep weekend series over visiting Cougars

Saturday, February 17th saw the Niagara Knights women's basketball program close out their regular season with a 77-36 home victory over the Sault Cougars (0-20, 11th OCAA West). Saturday's win completes the weekend sweep of the Cougars, keeping the Knights at 4th spot in the OCAA West Division.

Saturday afternoon's matchup was a special game for 4th year guard Mary Ingribelli who set the Niagara Knights' women's basketball program's single season scoring record with 382 points. Ingribelli broke the previous record of 301 points set nearly 30 years ago during the 1980-81 season by Knights' hall of fame member Carol St. Angelo. The Governor Simcoe standout is the program's all time leader in 3 point shots made, and is currently battling for this season's OCAA West division scoring title.

The Knights' carried their impressive play the previous night, once again outscoring their opponent in all four quarters. Niagara would also win the battle of the boards, out-rebounding the Cougars 48-27.

With a game high 22 points, Knights' veteran guard Mary Ingribelli would raise her average points per game to 19.1, closing the gap on Redeemer's star forward Jessica Bosma (19.6). The Royals have two regular season games remaining against Mohawk and Humber, meaning this season's West Division scoring title will come down to the wire.

The Knights will have an entire week off before hosting the OCAA crossover game Sunday, February 25th at Welland Campus Athletic Centre. The OCAA East Division opponent will be determined once the regular season standings have been confirmed. The victor of Sunday afternoon's matchup clinches a birth into this year's OCAA Championships hosted by Humber College. Tip off is scheduled for 2pm.
