RECAP: Knights extend unbeaten streak to four straight

RECAP: Knights extend unbeaten streak to four straight

After starting the season 0-2 and sitting at the bottom of the tough Central division, the Niagara College women's soccer (3-2-1, 4th Central) program has strung together their longest unbeaten streak in school history.  After pulling off an incredible upset by defeating the Humber Hawks (4-1-1, 1st Central), the Knights went on the road Sunday and continued their brilliance with another dominating win over the University of Toronto Mississauga Eagles (0-4-2, 5th Central).

The Eagles came into the game full of confidence after earning a draw against OCAA powerhouse Sheridan Bruins (4-1-1, 2nd Central).  The Knights new they would have to come out hard and fast to leave with three points and that is exactly what they did.

To no one's surprise, the reigning OCAA and CCAA athlete of the week Jackie Lawther (Beamsville) opened the scoring in the 15th minute after scoring on a feed from Rebecca Morrison (Erin).

At the start of the second half, Emily Babcock (Caledon) recorded her first goal of the season, the second of her career.  Her beautiful strike, from 25 yards out, snuck under the crossbar and gave the Knights a 2-0 lead.

UTM then scored a quick goal to bring the game within one, however the Knights made sure that was short lived.  Jackie Lawther added to her record smashing season when she scored her second goal of the match, sixth of the season, once again giving the Knights a two goal lead.

"It's exciting to see the girls really coming together and moving as a team this season," commented Lawther after the win.  "At the conclusion of every game we analyze our weaknesses and tackle them throughout the week during training sessions.  I am looking forward to what the second-half of the season holds for us."

Less than two minutes after Lawther's goal, former Brock Badger Alex Pasco (Niagara Falls) scored her second goal of the season, securing three points for the Knights.

At the conclusion of the match, the Knights coaching staff was quick to point out the excellent play of central defender Natalie Semenuk (Pelham).

"With injuries midway through the season, I have been playing more of a central position in the back, which is new to me," said Semenuk.  "The strong support from my teammates has allowed me to feel more comfortable.  We have all been playing our best soccer which is making us a very competitive team."

Half-way through the season, the Knights have already tied the school record for wins in a season (3) and have five more goals than any other season before.  The program is entering new territory, however the student-athletes have kept their attitudes in check.

"We can't get sucked in by any talk of streaks or records," said fifth-year head coach Frank DeChellis.  "The coaches have been working to help the girls not look past the current minute, half, and game at a time.  Soccer is a cruel sport that has a way to humble you, however I am very proud of what these girls have accomplished so far."

Now the Knights will be looking towards their redemption game against the Sheridan Bruins when they face off October 9th at Youngs SportsPlex.  Kick-off is set for 4:00pm.
