Female Athlete of the Week – Niagara Knights Women’s Volleyball

The Niagara Knights women’s volleyball program has been named this week’s female athletes of the week. In a weekend where it would be difficult to choose the Knights best player, the team had a number of key contributors en route to the program’s third ever silver medal this past weekend at the OCAA Championships.

The Knights travelled north to Canadore College and began their tournament with the quarter-finals on Thursday afternoon against the Trent Excalibur. They defeated the Excalibur 3-1, before defeating the Durham Lords 3-1 in the semi-final the following day. The Knights eventually dropped the gold medal match 3-0 to the Humber Hawks, who captured their ninth consecutive OCAA gold medal.

Jordan Koslowski (Hamilton) was named to the tournament all-star team for her efforts throughout the tournament. However, Niagara received significant contributions from throughout the lineup. Rachel Rivers (Cambridge) battled through a fractured ankle throughout the entire second half of the season in the silver medal performance. In her final games as an intercollegiate athlete, Jasmine Thome (Kenora) was a star for the Knights in all three games, bringing a powerful hitting approach up the middle throughout the weekend.

The silver medal matches the best ever performance by a Knights’ women’s volleyball team. As the season closes, the Niagara Knights Athletics & Recreation department are extremely proud of the resilient performance displayed by the entire team throughout the season.

Male Athlete of the Week – Tyrell Rogers, Men’s Basketball

Tyrell Rogers (Mississauga) of the Niagara Knights men’s basketball team program (12-6, 5th OCAA West) has been named this week’s male athlete of the week. Rogers helped the Knights defeated the George Brown Huskies (13-7, 4th OCAA West) in the opening round of the OCAA playoffs to advance to the OCAA Championship for the first time since the 2010-11 season.

In just over 19 minutes of action Rogers when 7 of 10 from the field for 17 points, as well as a pair of rebounds and steals. His 17 points and 70% shooting were both a season high for the third-year general arts student.

With the victory the Knights advance to the OCAA Championships at Humber College from March 4-6. Niagara will open their gold medal bid at 1:00 pm on March 4th against divisional rival Humber Hawks (15-3, 1st OCAA West).
