Men's Basketball lose Home Opener

Men's Basketball lose Home Opener

Sunday, October 26th saw the Niagara College men's (0-2, 10th West) basketball program lose to the Lambton Lions (1-1, 4th West) 88-80.

The Knights overcame a slow start to lead 42-40 at half but saw that quickly disappear as Lambton went on a 30-16 run in the third quarter and never looked back.

The Knights ran into foul trouble late in the second quarter with 5th year senior Ryan Christie (Hamilton, ON) receiving a technical foul and having to depart from the game.  The 6'7 center is the Knights primary rim defender and without him in the game, the Lions were able to drive to the basket at will.  The second half saw the Lions shoot 58% from the floor, outscoring the Knights 48-38.

In his first year as head coach, Keith Vassell was not impressed with how the Knights played. "I was disappointed with our overall desire to win," said coach Vassell. "Lambton wanted the win more than us and it showed in the final score.  We have a lot to work on before our upcoming game against St. Clair."

The Knights were unable to contain 3rd year guard out of Michigan, Brandon Padgett, who led the way for the Lions with a game high 31 points.  4th year center Mike Lucier added a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Freshman Trevon Ash (San Diego, CA) had a team high 22 points for the Knights, while Delroy Grandison (Kingston, JA) came off the bench contributing 13 points and 7 rebounds.

Up next for the Knights is a home game against the St. Clair Saints (1-0, 3rd West), a team that defeated Lambton at home 80-78.
