The Niagara College men's basketball (1-2) program defeated the visiting St. Clair Saints (1-2) 96-79 on Sunday, November 2nd at the Welland campus athletic centre.
The Knights picked up their first win of the season behind a 20 point and nine rebound effort from first-year forward Delroy Grandison (Kingston, JA). The six-foot-three welding techniques student has had a fantastic start to his OCAA career, averaging 16.6 points, and nine rebounds per game.
"Today was a total team effort" said Niagara College men's basketball head coach Keith Vassell. "We competed hard, stuck to our system, and played the type of game we need to play to compete in the strong OCAA West Division."
The Saints played the Knights tough in the opening quarter, and the two teams were tied at 20 after the first frame. The Knights however opened the second quarter with a strong 10-0 run, and never looked back, stretching their lead to as many as 26 in the third quarter on route to the strong 17 point victory.
Second year forward Ty Rogers also turned in a strong performance for the Knights. The six-foot-three native of Brampton finished with 16 points, while shooting guard Trevon Ash (San Diego, CA) finished with 13. Ash is averaging 21.6 points per game so far in 2014-15.
The team will now host the Fanshawe Falcons on Friday November 7th at 6:00pm at the Welland Campus athletic centre. The game will serve as the second annual Niagara College Knights Remembrance Day fundraiser.
All tickets sales from the event will be donated to the Royal Canadian Legion Fonthill branch 613. Last year's event saw $500 raised in support of Veteran's Affairs Canada. Additional donations to the Royal Canadian Legion will be accepted at the door.
