Men's Basketball
A nine hour bus ride to Sault Ste. Marie would not prevent the Niagara College men's basketball (3-3, 4th West) program from returning home with two much needed victories.
Saturday, November 15th saw the Knights defeat the Sault College Cougars (1-4, 9th West) by 27 points, 81-54. Niagara secured the win by outscoring the Cougars 32-8 in the fourth quarter. Trevon Ash (San Diego) scored eight of his game high 19 points down the stretch to help the Knights secure the victory. With starting centre Ryan Christie (Hamilton) injured and unable to make the long trip, fourth year forward Lawrence McNeil (St. Catharines) was given the start by head coach Keith Vassell. McNeil did not disappoint, as he collected a team high eight rebounds.
Sunday afternoon was much easier for Niagara College as they cruised to a 72-51 victory in game two. The Knights led for the entire game, bringing their regular season record back to .500. Freshman point guard Lequan Hylton (Mississauga) had a nice game, posting nine points and seven rebounds. All 13 players on the Knights played in the contest, making it a complete team victory.
The Cougars leading scorer, Joey Bruni (Sault Ste. Marie) led the team with 37 points over the two games but shot a miserable 27 percent from the floor. The Knights did an excellent job defensively, limiting second chance opportunities for Sault and holding them to 25 percent shooting.
The Knights were led offensively by Trevon Ash all weekend. He led the Knights with 36 points and eight rebounds, while shooting 50 percent from beyond the three point line. The solid numbers posted by Trevon earned him SAC male athlete of the week honours.
The team will host the undefeated Humber Hawks (7-0, 1st West) on November 20th.
