RECAP: Knights men's volleyball improve to 3-0

Sunday, November 1st saw the Niagara College men's volleyball program improve to 3-0 on the season with an impressive three-set sweep over the host Conestoga Condors (0-3). The set scores in the contest were 25-14, 25-19, 25-21. The win moves the Knights into a tie for first place in the highly competitive OCAA West Division with the Mohawk Mountaineers.

"Conestoga is a young program coached by Wayne Harris who has a track record of OCAA success" said Niagara College men's volleyball head coach Nathan Groenveld. "This early in our season however, our process is more about us and our development then anything on the other side of the net. I was happy with our offence tonight."

For the second consecutive match, the Knights saw 12 of 14 players dressed for the match see the floor. The team saw veteran Steve Stone (St. Catharines) and youngster Garrett Suderman (Niverville, MB) share the load in quarterbacking the offense from the setter position. Coach Groenveld felt both his setters "ran an efficient and dynamic offense" in the victory.

Reigning OCAA and CCAA men's volleyball athlete of the week Nathan Snippe (St. Anns) led the Knights' offensive attack. The six-foot-eight outside hitter finished with 12 kills and a block. Snippe leads the Knights through three matches averaging 4.2 points-per-set.

The difference in the match for the Knights proved to be the outstanding offensive play of rookie middle blockers Andrew VandenBurg (St. Catharines) and Shonari Hepburn (Nassau, Bahamas). The former Eden Flyer VandenBurg used his six-foot-five frame to his advantage finishing with nine kills, and two block. While the six-foot-seven Hepburn, who also competes for the Bahamian Sr. Men's National team finished with eight kills and two aces.

Groenveld added "we will enjoy this win and get right back to preparations for our swing trip to Sudbury."

The defending OCAA Champion Knights now sit at 3-0 on the season. Up next the team will travel to Sudbury on November 7th and 8th for a pair of matches against the Cambrian Golden Shield (0-3) and Boreal Vipers (1-2).
