RECAP: Scott digs his way into Knights record books in win over Redeemer

Jeff Scott (Georgetown) has dug his way into the Niagara Knights men's volleyball program's (11-3, 3rd OCAA West) record book in a victory over the Redeemer Royals (10-4, 4th OCAA West) on Friday night. After a slow start, the Knights stormed back to win the match in convincing fashion by a score of 3-1 (22-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-21).

Entering the contest with 419 digs to his credit, Scott recorded seven digs to surpass the previous career record of 420 set by former Knight Bailey Cochrane. Now with 425 digs in his career, Scott sits alone atop the Knights all-time career assist list. Scott also paced the Knights offensively with a game high 18 points in the victory.

The Knights started off slow in the match, as they took time to adjust to passing and serving in the tight confines of the Royals Gymnasium. Head Coach Nathan Groenveld was pleased with the team's response stating, "We battled really hard and I was proud of the response from the team the rest of the way."

Alongside Scott, Jonathan Wismer (Beamsville) and Nathan Snippe (St. Anns) each added 12 points. Steve Stone (St. Catharines) was once again a leader on the court for the Knights, distributing the ball well, accumulating 38 assists in the match. He also led the Knights defensively with 11 digs and two stuffed blocks.

Niagara now controls their own destiny when it comes to playoff positioning. If they can win their final four matches they will finish in second place in the OCAA West division, which is good enough to guarantee a first round playoff bye. They will begin the home stretch with a pair of home games January 6th and 7th at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre The Cambrian Golden Shield (0-15, 10th OCAA West) will visit on Saturday evening, while the Boreal Viperes (2-13, 9th OCAA West) will be in town for an afternoon matchup on Sunday.
