Koslowski and Stone named athlete of the week

Female Athlete of the Week – Jordan Koslowski, Women’s Volleyball

Jordan Koslowski of the Niagara College women’s volleyball program has been named this week’s female athlete of the week. Koslowski was the Knights’ best player during the team’s December 3rd five-set victory over the visiting Redeemer Royals.

A native of Hamilton, Koslowski is in her first year with the Knights. The match against the Royals saw the five-foot-eleven outside hitter finish with a season best 13 points on 10 kills and three blocks.

“Jordan had to make an immediate jump as a first year and learn to play against bigger, stronger players at the post-secondary level” said Niagara College women’s volleyball head coach Joey Martins.” Each day at practice she pushes herself to improve and get better, which speaks volumes about her as a player.”

The pre-health sciences student currently ranks fourth on the Knights in scoring with 56 points in nine matches. Koslowski and the rest of the Niagara College women’s volleyball program enter the 2015-16 midseason break ranked second in the provincial rankings with a record of 7-2. The team will return to action on January 14th when they host the Mohawk Mountaineers at 6:00pm at the Welland Athletic Centre.

Male Athlete of the Week – Steve Stone, Men’s Volleyball

Steve Stone of the Niagara College men’s volleyball program has been named this week’s male athlete of the week. Stone quarterbacked the Knights offense to a dominant three set home court victory over the Redeemer Royals on December 3rd.

The six-foot-two setter spent two seasons competing for the Royals. Against his former team, the St. Catharines native turned in an impressive 41 assists in just three sets of action.

“Steve was very good for us against Redeemer” said Niagara College men’s volleyball head coach Nathan Groenveld. “He did a great job of calling and controlling our offense, and he consistently put our outside hitters in good positions to score.”

Stone, who was named an OCAA all-star and Academic All-Canadian a year ago, has enjoyed a fantastic first half of the 2015-16 season averaging 9.28 assists-per-set, good enough for second in the OCAA.

Stone and the rest of the 7-2 Niagara College men’s volleyball program enter the mid-season break ranked No. 3 in the provincial and No. 8 nationally. The team will return to action on January 14th when they host the Mohawk Mountaineers at the Welland Athletic centre.
