RECAP: Niagara trumps Cambrian and Boreal in weekend doubleheader

It was a clean sweep for the Niagara Knights men's volleyball team (13-3, 2nd OCAA West) this weekend as they defeated the Cambrian Golden Shield (0-16, 10th OCAA West) and Boreal Vipères (2-15, 9th OCAA West).

Saturday evening saw the Knights earn a 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-19) sweep over the visiting Golden Shield. Garrett Suderman (Niverville, NB) ran a balanced offence for the Knights, recording 29 assists in the match. Jeff Scott (Mississauga) paced the Knights offensively with 11 kills, while Matt Friesen (Grunthal, MB) and Tristen Swinden (Whitby) each added eight kills. The Knights overwhelmed Cambrian, recording a hitting percentage over.400 on the strength of 36 kills and only 8 errors.

The Knights returned to the court on Sunday afternoon and recorded a 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-14) win over the Boreal Vipères. Cole Jordan (London) led the Knights offensively with eight kills. Jordan also added eight digs and three service aces as he powered the Knights to victory. Matt Friesen and Tristen Swinden both contributed five kills apiece.

Currently sitting in second place, the Knights control their own destiny heading into the playoffs. If they can win their final two matches, they will guarantee themselves a bye in the OCAA Championships. They hit the court next on Friday, February 12th when they welcome the Conestoga Condors (4-11, 8th OCAA West) to the Welland Campus Athletic Centre. Prior to the match Niagara College Athletics and Recreation will honour the Knights graduating athletes with a pre-game ceremony. The match is scheduled to begin at 8:00 pm.
