Women's Volleyball Impressive in Season Opener

Saturday, October 26th saw the Niagara College women's volleyball program cruise to a three-set victory over the Boreal Vipers in their 2013-14 season opener. Set scores for the contest were 25-22, 25-12, 25-6.

Niagara College women's volleyball head coach Joey Martins commented "tonight we started off quickly, played with lots of emotion, we played hard, and we found ways to score."

Leading the way offensively for the Knights was second-year outside hitter Megan Henderson. The five-foot-eight native on Fenwick finished with a game high 22 points. Henderson's 12 kills were impressive, but fueling the Knights' offensive attack was 10 aces she provided from the service line.

After the match Henderson commented "despite the long drive to Sudbury, we came in wanting to play and ready to go. We were focused and everything seemed to click today."

Also recording strong games for Niagara were a pair of outside hitters in Kayde Bailey (Burlington) and Maddi Morgan (Whitby).

The second-year Sport Management student Bailey provides the Knights with the versatility on the court. Her ability to play the setter, libero, and outside hitter position gives Coach Martins tremendous lineup flexibility. Bailey finished with seven kills, four aces, and one block.

Rookie outside hitter Maddi Morgan was also impressive in her OCAA debut. Standing at five-foot-nine Morgan possesses both power and athleticism. Morgan also finished the match with seven kills, four aces, and one block.

Coach Martins felt that one of the most important take-aways from the contest was the fact that the Knights "got progressively better as the match went on."

The Knights will face a short turnaround as the team will stay in Sudbury and play an afternoon match against the talented Cambrian Golden Shield on Sunday, October 27th. First serve is set for 2:00pm.
