Women’s Volleyball Program Adds Impact Outside Hitter Lucy McLay

The Niagara College women's volleyball program made a major addition this week with the announcement that outside hitter Lucy McLay will join the program for the upcoming season. McLay spent the last four years competing as a member of the Brock University Badgers.

Niagara College women's volleyball head coach Joey Martins commented "Lucy will be an impact player for our program next season. She is extremely talented and experienced, and as a program we are excited to have her in a Knights uniform."

The five-foot-ten McLay hails from Stratford, ON, and is a graduate of St. Michael's Catholic Secondary School. From the leftside position she finished the 2013-14 season ranked second in scoring on the Badgers with 192 kills, a total that saw her finish in the top-25 in OUA.

McLay completed a four year degree in Communications at Brock University before electing to continue her education at Niagara College in the post-graduate Public Relations program.

During a media event at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre McLay said she chose Niagara College "because I want to continue my volleyball career and in my last year of eligibility this school is the perfect fit for me. I already love the girls and coaches who have been on the team in previous years and I am looking forward to playing with some new players on the court."

The Knights fielded one of the youngest teams in the OCAA West Divison in 2013-14. McLay will join veteran OCAA West Division All-Stars Alex Botelho and Kayde Bailey, and a strong returning group of first-year players in Madison Morgan, Sami Bailey, and Roberta Dunlap.

"My goal is to put the ball away with every opportunity I get. I am hoping to be one of the top scorers on the court" added McLAy.  "But I am also hoping to be a leader for the younger players. Hopefully I can use my experience to help them feel comfortable and confident. "

Coach Martins continued "Lucy is a hard worker and an all-around quality individual and student. On the court she has the ability to put the ball away at any time and represents the elite caliber of student-athlete that Niagara College volleyball attracts."
