March 3, 2020...WELLAND - The Niagara College men's volleyball team is pleased to announce to signing of Micah and Ashton Nieuwets for 2020-2021. The signing of the Nieuwets brothers marks three new recruits in a week for the men's volleyball program for next season.
The name Nieuwets may strike a cord of familiarity with the Knights community, with Micah returning to the Knights after a one-year hiatus from the blue and white. Micah first signed with the Knights back in 2018-19, where he was named to the OCAA All-West Rookie team. Enrolled in Hospitality program for the Fall, head coach Tommy Sloan is thrilled to have Micah back in rotation.
"We are thrilled to have Micah return for the 2020-2021 season after one season away from the program," said Sloan. "Micah was a huge piece of the puzzle for us in 2018-2019 and will bring some experience and leadership to our program. He is explosive, dynamic, and his ability to manufacture points from difficult situations makes him a very dangerous player for opponents to deal with."
Joining the elder Nieuwets brother this season will be Eden High School '20 graduate Ashton Nieuwets. Standing at 6'0", the former Niagara Rapid will join Micah on the court for the 2020-2021 season.
"Ashton's size is very deceiving as he has the athletic ability to go up against guys much bigger than he is" said Sloan. "We've loved what we've seen from him and I feel that he'll not only add wonderful depth, but will be pushing for playing time from day one."
