RECAP: Women's volleyball sweep Saints; Improve to 2-0

Sunday, October 25th saw the Niagara College women's volleyball program improve to 2-0 on the season defeating the visiting St. Clair Saints three sets to none at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre. The set scores in the contest were 25-18, 25-17, 25-14.

"We won 3-0 against a good and young St. Clair Saints team" said Niagara College women's volleyball head coach Joey Martins. "They are much improved from last year. We were able to watch their match from last night against Redeemer and it gave us a good tell of what we would see today. Despite the scores, they were a tough opponent."

The Knights were paced by second year middle blocker Devon Lowes (Oakville). The towering six-foot-one team captain turned in arguably her best game in a Knights uniform, giving her team dominant offensive and defensive performance, finishing with game highs in both kills (8) and blocks (6).

First year libero Shayna Graham turned in her second consecutive strong defensive performance. The Sudbury native and dental hygiene student finished with a team high nine digs, giving her 25 in the team's first two matches. Coach Martins was quick to praise the "control and composure" of his defensive specialist.

"Considering the quick turn-around, heading into the match we had the game plan implemented and we stuck to it" continued Martins. "It really shows the mental ability of our players. These girls have been extremely coachable, and able to adjust and change things when needed."

Second year setter Bailey Davis continued her strong play to start the season. The Georgetown native is coming off a 2014-15 campaign that saw her named to the OCAA All-Rookie team. She finished the match against St. Clair with 21 assists in just three sets.

The Knights will have a full week of rest before hosting the Conestoga Condors on Sunday, November 1st at 1:00pm. New for the 2015-16 season all Niagara Knights home games can be watched live at www.goknights.ca/watchlive. Admission to all Knights home games is free for all students and those under the age of 17 and $5.00 for all other spectators.
