RECAP: Knights sweep Bruins; improve to 5-1

Saturday, November 14th saw the Niagara College women's volleyball program improve to 5-1 on the season with an impressive 3-0 home court victory over the visiting Sheridan Bruins. Set scores in the contest were 29-27, 25-21, 25-23.

The Knights struggled out of the gate, seemingly handcuffed by the strong service game of their Oakville opponents. The Bruins finished the match with a sensational 18 aces in the contest. Niagara trailed for the majority of the first set including being down 24-23 with Sheridan serving for the win. A key kill by Knights captain Devon Lowes (Oakville) off the ensuing serve, saw Niagara steal momentum and swing the match dramatically in their favour. The Knights would eventually take the set and never look back.

After the match Niagara College women's volleyball head coach Joey Martins was quick to praise Lowes' performance. "Devon was lights out today. Simple as that, she was fantastic. She had 16 points in just three sets, and she hit a fantastic 61%. She is having a great season."

Lowes, who entered the match averaging a team high 3.2 points-per-set, added to her impressive totals, finishing with team highs in kills (9), blocks (5), and service aces (2). Lowes is in her second year with the Knights and is currently enrolled in the Niagara College police foundations program.

"Sheridan is a very well coached team who played well, served aggressive, and really kept us off guard" continued coach Martins. "We didn't start very well but we played better once we settled down and found our rhythm after the first set."

Six-foot-one rightside Linnea Davis (Brampton) turned in her strongest performance of the 2015-16 season. The second-year sport management student finished with nine kills, two blocks, and an ace. "Linnea is rounding into form, she had a strong game today" added Martins.

Also turning in strong performances for the Knights was setter Bailey Davis (Georgetown) who finished with an impressive 34 assists, while outside hitter Rachel Rivers (Cambridge) added eight kills and a game high 15 digs.

Up next the Knights will travel to Etobicoke to take on the undefeated Humber Hawks (4-0) in a battle for first place in the OCAA West Division. The match is set for Thursday, November 19th at 6:00pm.
