RECAP: Knights begin season 3-0

RECAP: Knights begin season 3-0

The Niagara College women's volleyball (3-0, 2nd West) program went on the road Sunday afternoon and put their undefeated streak on the line against the Conestoga Condors (0-3, 9th West).  Entering into the game the Knights had set a new program record with ten straight OCAA regular season wins, with their last loss coming on January 7th, 2015 at Humber.

Led by team captain Devon Lowes (Oakville) and her game-high 14 points, the Knights extended their win streak to 11 with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-10, 19-25, 25-15) victory.  The third set loss was only the second set the Knights had lost all season (9-2).

"It was our best game to date," said head coach Joey Martins, who picked up career win number 44 on Sunday.  "It's not quite where we want to be, however every match we make tremendous progress."

The 44th career victory puts coach Martins only four games behind Knights hall of famer Kerby Bentley for second place all-time in wins as a head coach.

Jordan Koslowski (Hamilton) had her "best game to date", finishing with 12 points and three digs.  Rachel Rivers followed with 11 points while having a game-high 13 digs.

"She was called upon to set a couple times and did well for the little training she has at the position," added coach Martins, referring to the outstanding play of Rivers.

First-year outside hitter and Jean Vanier graduate Stephanie Tardiff (Welland) played three sets in this match and coach Martins was pleased with what he saw from his freshman.

"Steph came into the match and put her athleticism on display, by showing things that we had been working on to improve," said coach Martins.  "She served and passed well, and had some key digs at great times that really kept the momentum on our side."

The win improves Niagara's record against Conestoga to 6-1 on the road, 10-3 all-time.

The Knights will look to extend their win streak with back-to-back games on the road.  On November 7th, the Knights will play against the Cambrian Golden Shield (2-1, 3rd West) before playing the Boreal Viperes (0-3, 10th West) on November 8th
