The Niagara College men's volleyball program improved to 2-0 on the season on Sunday after defeating the Cambrian Golden Shield in three sets on Sunday. The set scores for the match were 25-9, 25-13, 25-19.
For the second consecutive match the Knights offense was led by third-year outside hitter Daniel Groenveld. The six-foot-four Welland native converted on over 58% of his attacks and finished the match with 14 kills, two blocks and an ace.
After the match Niagara College men's volleyball head coach Nathan Groenveld commented "Our discipline in block/defense right now is very good and is allowing us win a lot of points off our serve. Being able to block and defend allows us to take some risk from the baseline."
The Knights block defense is anchored by a pair of powerful and athletic middle blockers in second-year Logan Varga (Brantford) and first-year Travis Waite (St. Thomas). The two stand at six-foot-five and six-foot-four respectively, and were the driving force behind the net defense that saw the Knights out block Cambrian 14-2 in the match.
Also recording a strong game for the Knights was first-year setter Ricky Brar. The six-foot-two native of Brampton quarterbacked the Knights offense all match and finished the game with a game high 30 assists.
Coach Groenveld outlined the significant of his team's performance in Sudbury over the weekend. "Two wins this early in the season are great for us. Any time you can get four points from a long road trip like Sudbury it goes a long way."
The Knights will have a full week off before making their 2013-14 home court debut on Sunday, November 3rd at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre against the St. Clair Saints. First serve for the match is set for 2:00pm.
