Sunday, November 3rd saw the Niagara College Men's Volleyball program improve to 3-0 on the season after defeating the St. Clair Saints in three sets at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre. The set scores for the contest were 25-19, 25-22, 25-19.
The Knights have not lost a set during the 2013-14 season and will now face the undefeated Humber Hawks in a battle for first place in their next match.
The Knights continued their dominant play during Sunday's victory, utilizing the two headed offensive attack of Daniel Groenveld (Welland) and Jeff Scott (Georgetown) throughout the contest.
Groenveld, finished the match with a game high 17 kills. It marks the second consecutive match that the third-year general business student has served as the focal point of the Knights offense.
After the match however, Knights head Coach Nathan Groenveld spoke highly of second-year outside hitter Jeff Scott.
"Jeff Scott played extremely well in his first match at a new position. Normally Jeff plays as an outside hitter that we depend on for passing stability, but tonight he stepped in and gave us some great offense from the rightside. His defense, blocking, and outstanding serve were also big contributors to the win."
Scott is in his second year with the Knights and is the reigning OCAA Men's Volleyball rookie of the year. The Broadcasting, Radio, Television, and Film student finished the match with eight kills, two blocks, and a service ace. Scott was named Niagara College male athlete of the week for his performance.
Up next for knights is a pair of key matches that will go a long way in determining the top of the standings in the highly competitive OCAA West Division.
On Thursday, November 7th the team will travel to Humber to take on the 3-0 Hawks. The team will then face a quick turnaround when they host the 2012-13 OCAA silver medalist Mohawk Mountaineers on Sunday, November 10th at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre.
