Men's Volleyball Eliminated in Bronze Medal Semi-Final

This weekend saw the Niagara College men's volleyball program wrap up the 2013-14 season with a three sets to one loss to the Fanshawe Falcons in the OCAA Bronze medal semi -final. The Knights were one of eight teams competing in the OCAA Championship being hosted by the Georgian Grizzlies.

The OCAA gold medal was awarded the Mohawk Mountaineers and the silver medal went to the Humber Hawks. The Falcons went on to capture the bronze medal.

The Knights opened the tournament with a tough five-set loss to the Durham Lords. The loss moved the Knights to the bronze medal bracket, and in their second game the team faced the hometown Georgian Grizzlies.

The Knights turned in their strongest performance of the tournament, winning in four sets. The team utilized a balanced offensive attack as Daniel Groenveld (18), Jeff Scott (12), Logan Varga (11), and Travis Waite (11) all finished in double digit kills.

The Knights next opponent was the Fanshawe Falcons, in a surprise bronze medal semi-final matchup between two teams that entered the event with their eyes set on an OCAA Championship.

The back and forth affair saw the Falcons emerge with a hard fought four set victory. The set scores in the contest were 25-23, 25-28, 22-25, 30-28.

The two teams each utilized their recently named CCAA All-Canadian outside hitters. Fanshawe's Mathieu Poulin had an outstanding game, finishing with 26 kills on just 49 attempts, while the Knights' Groenveld recorded a team high 20 points.

Groenveld was named to the tournament all-star team for his performance over the three day event.

After the event Niagara College men's volleyball head coach Nathan Groenveld commented "although not leaving with a medal was extremely disappointing I am very proud of how hard we battled and competed this week. This is a huge step in our process as a young group and we will pull a wealth of experience and knowledge out of this tournament that will serve us very well in the future."
