Men's Volleyball 2-0 in Weekend Play

Men's Volleyball 2-0 in Weekend Play

In Sunday afternoon action, the Niagara College Knights Men's Volleyball program moved into second place in the OCAA West Division with a win over the Cambrian Golden Shield at the Niagara College Welland Campus Athletic Centre. The win wraps up the Knights' regular season with a 14-4 record.

The Knights took the first set 25-15 and did not look back, winning the next two 25-16 and 25-18 to take the match in straight sets.  Ben Fillmore (Cayuga, ON), Nathan Snippe (Smithville, ON), and Logan Varga (Brantford, ON) paced the Knights' attack with seven, six, and five kills respectively, while Daniel Groenveld  (Welland, ON) chipped in four kills and three service aces in just one set of action. Jeff Scott (Georgetown, ON) continued to play away from his regular position of outside hitter, as he filled in for injured starting libero Bailey Cochrane. Scott finished with a team high 15 digs on the afternoon.

The win comes just one day after another straight sets win over the Boreal Vipers. Head Coach Nathan Groenveld said "it's always positive to go into the playoffs on a winning note and with your confidence peaking. Now we just have to wait and find out later this week what our playoff schedule looks like."

The Knights currently sit in second place in the highly competitive OCAA West Division. The Fanshawe Falcons currently sit just two points back and have one game remaining on their schedule. Additionally the Falcons hold the 'tie-breaker' over the Knights in the event of a tie in the standings.

Fanshawe will play their final game of the 2013-14 regular season Wednesday, February 12th when the team travels to Sheridan to take on the Bruins. By Thursday morning, the Knights will know if they have earned a bye in the OCAA Championship, or if they will host a playoff  crossover  game on Sunday, February 16th at 1:00pm.
