Daniel Groenveld and Kaitlyn McPherson Named Athletes of the Week

Male Athlete of the Week - Daniel Groenveld

Daniel Groenveld of the Niagara College men’s volleyball program has been selected as this week’s male athlete of the week. Groenveld was named tournament All-Star for his performance last week at the 2014 OCAA Championship. This marks the third time in 2013-14 Groenveld has been named Athlete of the week.

The six-foot-four outside hitter is a native of Welland, a graduate of Welland Notre Dame, and is enrolled in the Niagara College general business program.

Last week also saw Groenveld named a 2013-14 CCAA All-Canadian. The selection marks just the seventh time in Knights’ history that a Niagara College student-athlete has been named an All-Canadian. He was also named an OCAA First-Team all-star for the 2013-14 season.

At the OCAA Championship, Groenveld finished with tournament high 20 points-per-game average over the Knights’ three matches against the Durham Lords, Georgian Grizzlies, and Fanshawe Falcons.

Niagara College men’s volleyball head coach Nathan Greonveld commented “Daniel had an outstanding year for our program. His skill, experience, and leadership were instrumental in helping with the development of our young team.”

Female Athlete of the Week - Kaitlyn McPherson

Kaitlyn McPherson of the Niagara College women’s basketball program has been selected as this week’s female athlete of the week. McPherson led the knights during the team’s hard fought 73-63 playoff loss to the St. Lawrence Vikings. This marks the third time during the 2013-14 season that McPherson has earned the accolade.

A depleted Knights lineup traveled to Kingston on Saturday, February 22nd to face the high scoring St. Lawrence Vikings. McPherson, a third-year forward for the Knights, played one of her strongest games of the season finishing with 14 points and a team high eight rebounds.

The local Welland native is a graduate of Confederation high school, and is currently enrolled in the Niagara College early childhood education program.

McPherson has enjoyed a strong 2013-14 season, averaging nine points and six rebounds per game.

Niagara College women’s basketball head coach Mike Becarria commented “Kaitlyn played really hard this weekend for us. She really stepped up her game, and I’m proud of the way she performed.”
