Male Athlete of the Week - Daniel Groenveld

For the second time this year Daniel Groenveld of the Niagara College men’s volleyball program has been selected as this week’s male athlete of the week. Groenveld was instrumental in helping lift the CCAA’s number two ranked Knights to a pair of victories over the Humber Hawks and Mohawk Mountaineers.

Groenveld averaged 17 kills and two service aces per game during the two victories. The six-foot-four local Welland native has been at points unstoppable for the Knights this season.

Groenveld was the focal point of the Knights offense that defeated the CCAA’s number five ranked Humber Hawks three sets to one on Thursday, November 7^th.

Groenveld is in his first-year with the Knights after spending the previous two seasons as a member of the McMaster University Marauders. He is enrolled in the Niagara College General Business program

Female Athlete of the Week - Tara Giallonardo

Tara Giallonardo of the undefeated Niagara College women’s basketball program has been selected as this week’s female athlete of the week. Gaillonardo is off to a fantastic start to the 2013-14 season averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds per game.

Gaillonardo is a native of Fonthill, and during the Knights November 8^th victory over the visiting Sheridan Bruins, the five-foot-six guard finished with game highs in points with 23, and rebounds with eight.

The veteran Giallonardo competed for four seasons with the Brock University Badgers, before pursuing a graduate diploma in the Niagara College exercise science for fitness and health promotion program.

Giallonardo and the rest of the Niagara College women’s basketball program will return to action on Thursday, November 14^th when the team faces the Humber Hawks in a matchup between the two remaining undefeated teams in the OCAA West Division. Tip-off is set for 6:00pm at the Humber Athletic Centre.
