Daniel Groenveld and Alyssa McCabe Named Athletes of the week

Male Athlete of the Week - Daniel Groenveld

Daniel Groenveld of the Niagara College men’s volleyball program has been selected as this week’s male athlete of the week. Groenveld was dominant this weekend during both of the Knights’ road victories against the Boreal Vipers and Cambrian Golden Shield.

Groenveld is a native of Welland, Ontario and is currently in his third year of athletic eligibility and first year with the Niagara College men’s volleyball program. The six-foot-four outside hitter spent the past two seasons competing as a member of the McMaster Marauders.

Groenveld was particularly effective during the Knights’ October 27th three-set sweep versus Cambrian. He finished the match with 14 kills, two blocks, and a service ace.

Niagara college men’s volleyball head coach Nathan Groenveld commented “Daniel has really helped stabilize our passing game, and has brought a professional work ethic to the program. For our young team he is a great example of what is needed to prepare for matches and to be a winning program.”

Daniel and the rest of the Niagara College men’s volleyball program will resume action on Sunday, November 3rd when the team hosts the St. Clair saints at 2:00pm.

Female Athlete of the Week - Alyssa McCabe

Alyssa McCabe of the Niagara College women’s basketball program has been selected as this week’s female athlete of the week. McCabe was instrumental in helping the Knights secure a pair of wins this weekend over the visiting Sault College Cougars.

From the point guard position, the first-year Niagara Falls native averaged 15.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 4 steals in the Knights two victories.

The five-foot-five graduate of A.N. Myer is in just her first year of eligibility after spending the 2012-13 season as a redshirt freshman with the Brock University Badgers. McCabe is enrolled in the Niagara College educational assistant – special needs support program.

McCabe was particularly effective during the Knights’ 73-50 victory on October 26th. McCabe finished the contest with 17 points and 15 rebounds prompting her head coach Mike Becarria to comment “Alyssa stepped up big time tonight. She had an outstanding game and is still improving every day.”

Up next for McCabe and the rest of the Niagara College women’s basketball program is a Friday, November 1st matchup with the Fanshawe Falcons.
